The importance of regular cleanings and exams

Prevention is the key to long-lasting oral health. Regular cleanings and exams not only keep your smile looking great but also help catch any potential problems early. By staying proactive with your dental care, you can avoid more serious and costly procedures down the road.

Our team takes the time to ensure that each cleaning is thorough and personalized to meet your individual needs, making sure your teeth and gums stay in the best shape possible.

What to expect during your cleaning and exam

  • Thorough cleaning

Our skilled hygienists use state-of-the-art tools to remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.

  • Comprehensive exam

Our dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and overall oral health to look for signs of decay, gum disease, or other issues that might require attention.

  • X-rays

If needed, we may take X-rays to check for hidden problems that are not visible during a visual exam.

Why regular cleanings and exams are important

  • Prevent cavities and gum disease.
  • Detect issues like cavities, oral cancer, and other health concerns early.
  • Keep your smile looking and feeling great.

Cleanings & Exams Questions

  • A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces at and just below the gum line, while a deep cleaning, known as scaling and root planing, goes further beneath the gum to treat active gum disease. Which one you need depends on the condition of your gums, not on preference.

  • Most people find a routine cleaning uncomfortable at worst rather than painful, and it is usually easier the more regularly you come. Sensitive teeth and inflamed gums make it harder, so tell your hygienist before she starts rather than gritting your teeth through it.

  • No. Imaging is taken when it will show us something an examination cannot, which for most patients is considerably less often than every visit. How often depends on your age, your history of decay and what we are monitoring.

  • A cleaning removes surface staining from coffee, tea and tobacco, so teeth often look brighter afterwards, but it does not change the underlying colour of the tooth. If you want a genuine change in shade, that is whitening, which is a separate treatment.

  • Bleeding gums are common but they are not normal, and they are usually the first visible sign of gum inflammation. It is worth having looked at early, because gum disease is far easier to reverse in its first stage than later on.

Answers to help you plan your care

Bleeding Gums: Do You Need a Routine or Deep Cleaning?

Bleeding gums are a reason to arrange a dental assessment, but they do not tell you by themselves which cleaning you need. Your dentist checks the gums and the support around your teeth before recommending routine care, treatment for gum disease, or a referral.

  • Technology

Solea laser dentistry: when numbing may still be needed

A laser is one tool in a treatment plan. Ask whether it suits your tooth and how discomfort will be managed before deciding what to expect.

  • Nervous patients

Dental anxiety is real: what actually helps

If you have been putting off the dentist for years, you are in ordinary company and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. What helps depends on what specifically you dread.

Keeping your smile healthy is simple with regular cleanings and exams. Contact Park Place Dental today to book your next appointment and ensure that your teeth stay strong and bright.
